Super Eagles Geared Up for Showdown Against Lesotho in 2026 World Cup Qualifier

The Nigerian Super Eagles are set to face Lesotho in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Thursday evening at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Head coach Jose Peseiro has unveiled his 23-man squad for the anticipated match, featuring notable players such as Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Olaoluwa Aina from various clubs, including Leicester City, Atalanta, Fulham, Brentford, and Nottingham Forest.

However, the Super Eagles will be without key players like Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, and Wilfred Ndidi for the Lesotho clash.

Despite these absences, Nigeria remains optimistic, having won all three encounters with Lesotho since 2007.

The West African giants, champions of the 2013 AFCON, aim to extend their winning streak when they host Leslie Notsi’s side.

Nigeria competes in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, facing challenges from Zimbabwe, Benin, South Africa, and Rwanda in subsequent matches.

Leading up to the Lesotho fixture, the Super Eagles secured a 3-2 victory against Mozambique and played a 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia in their last friendly games in October.

Peseiro, appointed as head coach on May 15, 2022, has faced challenges, with eight losses and five wins prior to the recent friendlies.

Football enthusiasts, like Alpha Markus Sidi, midfielder for Wakanda FC, believe in the Super Eagles’ capabilities despite the absence of key players.

Sidi emphasized the importance of starting the World Cup qualifying series with a win against Lesotho.

Players to watch, according to Sidi, include Taiwo Awoniyi, in-form after recovering from injury; Frank Onyeka, a standout performer for Brentford in midfield; and Ola Aina, a regular contributor for Nottingham Forest.

Additionally, he highlighted the talents of Ademola Lookman from Atalanta, praising his ability to maneuver past opponents.

Offering his prediction for the match, Sidi anticipates a 2-0 victory in favor of the Super Eagles.

The kick-off time for the Nigeria vs Lesotho encounter is set for 5 pm.
