Resident Doctors Give Enugu Government 14-Day Ultimatum for Doctor Employment and Security Assurance

The Association of Resident Doctors at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) has issued a stern 14-day ultimatum to the Enugu State Government, demanding the immediate employment of more doctors and enhanced security measures.

This ultimatum was conveyed through a communique released after the conclusion of the Emergency General Meeting (EGM) held at ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, on Friday, November 17, 2023.

The document, jointly signed by the President of ARD-ESUT, Dr. Chukwunonso Ofonere, and its Secretary-General, Dr. Ikemefuna Nnamani, highlighted critical issues concerning the shortage of doctors and the safety of medical personnel.

The statement urged both the management of ESUTH Teaching and the Enugu State Government to declare a state of emergency regarding the employment of doctors within the hospital.

It expressed concern that despite a promise made 120 days ago by the Secretary to the State Government to employ Medical Officers and Resident Doctors, there has been no visible progress in this regard.

The communique disclosed the association’s awareness of the Management’s proposed safety plan for doctors and health workers within the hospital. However, it emphasized the need for urgent action, given the escalating challenges faced by medical professionals.

In its demands, the EGM extended the initial 14-day ultimatum by an additional 14 days, set to conclude on December 1

. The statement outlined three key points for immediate action:

  • State of Emergency on Doctor Employment: The management should urgently declare a state of emergency on doctor employment and seek approval for the recruitment of medical officers, resident doctors, and House Officers.
  •  Priority should be given to departments such as Accident and Emergency, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynaecology.
  • Implementation of Safety Policies: The hospital’s management must swiftly implement safety policies to safeguard workers against physical attacks and kidnapping within one week, as previously pledged by the Chief Medical Director (CMD).
  • Implementation of 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF): The immediate implementation of the 2023 MRTF, in line with practices in other states, along with a list of eligible doctors and the associated financial implications.

The statement concluded by warning that if the stipulated demands are not met after the 14-day extension, the association cannot guarantee industrial harmony.

This ultimatum underscores the pressing need for swift action to address the critical issues affecting healthcare professionals in Enugu State.
