In a fervent plea that resonated across social media platforms, renowned Yoruba activist Sunday Igboho called upon the Federal Government to promptly release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), whose trial has been ongoing at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Igboho’s impassioned appeal, conveyed through a widely circulated video on Tuesday, coincided with Kanu’s latest appearance in court on Monday, February 26, 2024. This court session marked Kanu’s first appearance following a Supreme Court ruling on December 15, 2023, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Since his arrest in June 2021, Kanu has been held in custody, awaiting trial, amidst a backdrop of heightened tensions and legal proceedings.
In his message, Igboho left no room for ambiguity, stressing Kanu’s innocence and urging an end to political machinations surrounding his incarceration. He emphasized the fundamental right of Kanu to be reunited with his family, asserting that justice demands his release.
“Release Nnamdi Kanu. Stop politics,” Igboho implored in the video. “This guy didn’t do anything. Today is February 27, 2024. Release him, let him go, and stay with his family.”
Drawing parallels between his own activism and Kanu’s cause, Igboho highlighted the shared struggle for the rights and interests of their respective people.
“This guy just fights for his people in the Southeast like me that I’m fighting for my people in Yorubaland,” Igboho declared.
With a tone of urgency and conviction, Igboho called for an end to the political gamesmanship surrounding Kanu’s detention, urging authorities to prioritize justice and humanity above all else.
“Release him, let him go. Stop these political games. Release Kanu, let him go home, please release him,” Igboho pleaded, encapsulating the sentiments of many who advocate for justice and fair treatment in Nigeria’s judicial system.
As Igboho’s impassioned plea reverberates across the nation, it underscores the importance of upholding principles of fairness, due process, and human rights in all legal proceedings, regardless of political or ideological affiliations. The call to release Nnamdi Kanu serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring pursuit of justice in Nigeria’s evolving socio-political landscape.
