Seven Super Falcons players, namely Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Tony Payne, Christy Ucheibe, Osinachi Ohale, and Uchenna Kanu, have been shortlisted for the prestigious 2023 CAF Women’s Player of The Year award.
Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, acclaimed for her heroic performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and with her club side, Paris FC, has also been listed for the Goalkeeper of the Year category.
The preliminary nominees for various women’s categories for the CAF Awards 2023 were unveiled on the official CAF website, cafonline.com.
The Women’s Player of The Year category features 30 nominees from 12 countries, with Nigeria and South Africa leading with six players each.
Among the nominees is Falconets star Esther Ajakaye, who made her Super Falcons debut in the 2024 Olympics qualifiers against Ethiopia.
She is nominated alongside compatriots Deborah Abiodun and Oluwatosin Demehin for the Young Player of the Year category.
Coach Randy Waldrum, who guided the Super Falcons to the round of 16 in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, is in contention for the Coach of the Year award.
Nigeria is also set to compete against other African nations for the National Team of the Year, including Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ghana, Malawi, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.
Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala, the current holder of the top prize, is seeking her sixth crown after winning the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award for the fifth time in 2022.
