In the wake of the recent release of the abducted Kuriga schoolchildren in Kaduna State, questions linger as to the circumstances surrounding their freedom.
Bulama Bukarti, a prominent security expert, asserts that clarity is paramount, insisting that Nigerians have a fundamental right to understand the intricacies of the rescue operation.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Bukarti underscored the necessity for transparency in the handling of such critical matters.
“I have been investigating the circumstances of their release…I did not find any information to that effect,” he stated, reflecting the widespread ambiguity surrounding the ordeal.
“As Nigerians, we have the right to know how our government is proceeding with securing us…We have the right to know by law but we also have the right to know as Nigerians so that we may have confidence in our country,” Bukarti emphasized, echoing the sentiments of many citizens grappling with the uncertainty of the situation.
The lack of official clarity has fueled speculation, with rumors swirling about the possible payment of ransom for the children’s release.
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, announced the students’ freedom, yet details regarding the rescue operation remained conspicuously absent, contributing to the prevailing air of uncertainty.
However, the Federal Government swiftly moved to dispel rumors of ransom payment. Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, categorically stated that no ransom was paid, attributing the successful rescue to the concerted efforts of the nation’s security agencies. “President Bola Tinubu is determined to end this cycle of payment of ransom to kidnappers,” Idris affirmed, reiterating the government’s steadfast stance against capitulating to extortion.
Furthermore, Idris emphasized the administration’s resolve to combat the scourge of abductions, asserting that reckless commentary would not be tolerated.
The government’s commitment to quashing insecurity remains resolute, with a stern warning issued to those who might exacerbate the situation with inflammatory remarks.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this harrowing ordeal, the imperative for transparency and accountability in matters of national security becomes increasingly apparent.
Nigerians, still reeling from the trauma inflicted by rampant kidnappings, demand not only swift action but also open communication from their leaders, underscoring the inherent right to be informed and assured in the face of adversity.
