Lagos, Abuja Demolitions: Ohanaeze Expresses Concerns

Amidst the ongoing demolitions of buildings in unauthorized areas in Lagos and Abuja, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, has raised concerns and called for a suspension of the demolition exercise.

The organization’s President, Chief Emmanuel Iwuayanwu, conveyed the appeal following complaints received about the adverse impact of the demolitions.

The Lagos State government, however, defended its actions, asserting that the demolitions are in accordance with the rule of law and aimed at creating a greater Lagos that adheres to proper planning laws and regulations.

Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, emphasized that the government is focused on removing buildings constructed on canals and drainage channels, essential measures to prevent environmental challenges in a city situated below sea level.

Contrary to claims of targeted demolitions, Omotoso clarified that the exercise has no ethnic, religious, professional, gender, or ethnic bias.

He highlighted the importance of obtaining permits before commencing any building project, ensuring compliance with planning laws for both residential and business structures.

In response to Ohanaeze’s concerns, Chief Emmanuel Iwuayanwu, during a news conference, acknowledged the need for compliance with laws and regulations.

He appealed to the Lagos State Government to intervene, emphasizing that the Igbo leadership does not support misconduct from any Igbo individual who fails to adhere to the laws of the land.

Iwuanyanwu also conducted an investigation into the demolitions, acknowledging that some instances might involve non-compliance with Lagos State laws.

He urged the Lagos State Government to suspend the demolitions and ensure justice for affected families.

Additionally, he emphasized that individuals who adhere to regulations deserve peaceful enjoyment of their assets, and any government demolishing approved properties must provide appropriate compensation.

Furthermore, Ohanaeze Ndigbo plans to establish an Ohanaeze Relief Agency, controlled by top Igbo leaders, to offer support to Nigerians in need, fostering a spirit of brotherhood.

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi also decried the demolitions across the country in a tweet, expressing concern for the hardship faced by citizens.

Obi urged responsive governance, emphasizing the need for measures to alleviate people’s hardships, especially during challenging economic conditions.

He called for compassion in government actions, considering the severe financial stress experienced by the poor, whose properties, in some cases, represent their lifetime savings and retirement abodes.

As the demolition issue unfolds, the dialogue between the Lagos State government, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and concerned individuals reflects the importance of balancing developmental initiatives with empathy for citizens facing economic challenges.
