Following a less-than-ideal performance against Lesotho in Uyo on Thursday, Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho is determined to guide the team to victory against the Warriors of Zimbabwe today. South Africa currently leads Group C after defeating Benin Republic 2-1 in their opening game.
The Warriors of Zimbabwe, who play their home games in Rwanda, secured a draw against Rwanda on Wednesday, earning them one point in the qualification race.
The Super Eagles, arriving in the city yesterday morning, are focused on getting their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign back on track with a win at the Huye Stadium in Butare.
Iheanacho, who captained the team against Lesotho, expressed disappointment with the outcome of the game and emphasized the need for a win against Zimbabwe.
Despite the draw against Lesotho, he remains optimistic about securing three points in the upcoming match.
“Huge honor to captain the team in Uyo on Thursday.
I know that was a game we have to win but we didn’t. We got a point from it. Hopefully, we will do a lot more in the next game and get the three points against Zimbabwe,” he stated.
South Africa’s victory over Benin Republic has propelled them to the top of Group C with three points. The Super Eagles are eager to secure a win to improve their standing in the group.
In a related development, Nigeria’s senior men’s handball team, the Golden Arrows, has been drawn in Group D of the 23rd African Handball Cup of Nations in Egypt from January 19 to 29, 2024.
The tournament will also serve as a qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the 2025 World Handball Championship.
