In a historic moment for Nigeria’s aviation sector, Ibom Air, founded by the former governor of Akwa Ibom state, Udom Emmanuel, marked a significant achievement with the delivery of its first Airbus A220-300 series airplane.
The event, attended by Udom Emmanuel himself, symbolized the realization of a vision set in motion during his tenure, with the procurement of 10 brand new Airbus A220-300 series planes in 2021.
Established in 2019 under Udom Emmanuel’s administration, Ibom Air reached a pivotal milestone on November 16, 2021, during the Dubai Air show, where a firm agreement for the acquisition of the Airbus A220-300 series planes was reached.
The official inspection and reception of the first aircraft occurred on a Friday in Montreal, Canada, at Airbus’ Mirabel facility, with Udom Emmanuel and top Ibom Air management in attendance.
The presentation of the new Airbus aircraft was led by Airbus CEO Benoit Schultz, accompanied by Vice President Daniel Wenninger, Head of Airbus A220 Delivery Center Marc Arpin, and Sales Director for Middle-East & Africa Cyrille Picard. Ibom Air’s top management, including Managing Director and CEO Captain Mfon Udom and Executive Director and COO George Uriesi, played a crucial role in the momentous occasion.
Founder of Ibom Air and former Governor Udom Emmanuel emphasized that Ibom Air is the pioneer airline in Nigeria to take delivery of the state-of-the-art Airbus A220.
During his tenure, he envisioned Ibom Air emerging as a dominant force in West African and African aviation, commending Governor Umo Eno for sustaining the aviation development project.
The Airbus A220-300, renowned for its revolutionary fuel efficiency, cutting-edge technology, and superior passenger comfort and safety features, represents a breakthrough in modern aviation.
Designed for short and medium-haul commercial operations, the aircraft boasts a range of up to seven hours (3,450 nautical miles).
The introduction of the Airbus A220-300 to Ibom Air’s fleet marks a strategic move for the airline, positioning it for expanded services across diverse African destinations. CEO Mfon Udom expressed great enthusiasm, stating, “The introduction of the Airbus A220-300 to our fleet is a game-changing leap forward for Ibom Air.
The decision to invest in a fleet of highly efficient brand-new aircraft to power our growth plans underscores our determination to offer no less than world-class airline services to our valued customers.”
This monumental development not only elevates Ibom Air’s status but also contributes to the advancement of Nigeria’s aviation industry on the global stage.
