Renowned Nigerian singer Yemi Alade has recently disclosed that, contrary to popular belief, she did not initially perceive music as a career but rather as a passionate pursuit.
In a candid conversation on the latest episode of the Tea With Tay podcast, Alade delved into the early days of her musical journey, highlighting the unexpected trajectory that led her to become a prominent figure in the music industry.
The ‘Johnny’ crooner, who has earned multiple awards for her musical prowess, expressed that her initial approach to music was purely driven by passion.
Reflecting on her past, Alade stated, “It [music] was always a passion, and I was hoping to see where it would take me. Do I feel like I needed to drop everything I was doing in life and focus solely on music? No.”
Further elaborating on her perspective, Alade emphasized, “I loved the idea of it [music], but I did not want it to be a career. I did not see it as a career. It was a big hobby I was very invested in. But not a career. If you had asked me 11/12 years ago if I wanted to be a musician, I would not pick that as a career choice. I still wouldn’t do it.”
Alade revealed that, despite her deep involvement in various music-related activities, she had initially envisioned combining her passion for music with her academic pursuits.
“As much as I was into a lot of music-related stuff, I just believed that this hobby I would do something with it, but I’m going to continue with my academics like my parents want me to. I’m certain I’m going to get a job if music didn’t work out.”
The turning point in Alade’s perspective came after she emerged victorious in the Peak Talent Show in 2009. Following this triumph, she signed with Effyzzie Music Group, marking a pivotal moment in her career trajectory.
The subsequent hit with her single ‘Johnny’ in 2014 catapulted her into the spotlight, solidifying her status as a prominent figure in the Nigerian music scene.
Yemi Alade’s journey serves as a testament to the unpredictable nature of one’s career path, with passion ultimately steering her towards a profession that she had not initially considered.
As she continues to leave an indelible mark on the music industry, Alade’s revelation offers fans a deeper understanding of the genuine and organic origins of her musical endeavors.
