El-Rufai Receives Prestigious Chieftaincy Title as Gbobaniyi of Ijebuland

The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has bestowed the distinguished title of Gbobaniyi of Ijebuland upon the former governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Saturday.

The prestigious event also witnessed the conferment of chieftaincy titles on Jimi Lawal, a former governorship hopeful in Ogun, and his wife, Maryam.

El-Rufai, expressing his joy, took to his verified X handle (formerly Twitter) on Friday night to share the momentous news.

In his statement, he revealed that the Awujale, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, chose to honor Jimi Lawal with two chieftaincy titles for his noteworthy contributions to the Ijebu Kingdom and Nigeria. Alongside Jimi, Maryam Lawal was also recognized for her commendable contributions.

What stood out as a unique honor was El-Rufai’s acknowledgment that he is the first person outside the southwest region to be conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Awujale.

In his post, El-Rufai conveyed his gratitude, saying, “I also am privileged to be the first Nigerian outside of South-West of Nigeria to be conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Awujale in his nearly 64-year reign.”

The specific title bestowed upon El-Rufai is Gbobaniyi of Ijebuland, a recognition that carries significant cultural and historical weight.

The former governor expressed his appreciation for the recognition and extended thanks to Kabiyesi Awujale for the honor, while also expressing gratitude to those who had wished him well on this remarkable occasion.

El-Rufai, who served as the governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, has been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. The conferment of the chieftaincy title underscores not only his political contributions but also his positive impact beyond the geographical confines of the South-West.

As the ceremony marks a convergence of political and cultural significance, it raises questions about the evolving nature of regional honors and recognitions.

El-Rufai’s reception of the Gbobaniyi title serves as a testament to the interconnectedness of Nigerian leaders across different regions and highlights the role of traditional institutions in fostering unity and recognizing excellence.

The Awujale’s decision to extend this honor to El-Rufai adds a new chapter to the rich tapestry of Nigeria’s cultural heritage. It symbolizes a bridge between regions, fostering a sense of shared identity and appreciation for individuals who contribute significantly to the nation’s progress.

As El-Rufai joins the esteemed ranks of chieftains in Ijebuland, the ceremony stands as a testament to the enduring power of cultural traditions and the ability of leaders to transcend regional boundaries in their service to the nation.
