Superstar singers Burna Boy and Rema secured victories in the inaugural Afrobeats categories at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, November 19.
Burna Boy clinched the Top Afrobeats Artiste, outshining competitors Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Cameroonian star Libianca, making history as the first-ever winner in the newly-established Top Afrobeats Artiste category.
In the same vein, Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ remix featuring Selena Gomez won the Top Afrobeats Song, triumphing over contenders Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Oxlade’s ‘Ku Lo Sa,’ Libianca’s ‘People,’ and Victony’s ‘Soweto.’ Rema and Don Toliver took home the inaugural Top Afrobeats Song award.
However, the ‘Calm Down’ remix did not secure wins in the Top Billboard Collaboration, Top Billboard Excl. U.S. Song, Top Billboard Global 200 Song, and Top Radio Song categories.
American singer Morgan Wallen dominated the winners’ list with 11 awards, closely followed by Taylor Swift with 10 victories.
