Benue Boy Exposes Music Industry Realities: “Cartels Killing Nigerian Music Industry”

Nigerian singer Peter Obaje, widely recognized as Benue Boy, has boldly asserted that the Nigerian music industry is currently operating as a cartel, lamenting the challenges artists face, particularly those who do not align themselves with any confraternity.

In a revealing podcast episode titled “Encounter with Chris J,” the ‘Ameriya’ crooner delved into the intricate dynamics of the music industry, highlighting what he perceives as a pervasive issue stifling the growth of artists who opt not to be associated with certain groups.

Benue Boy pulled back the curtain on the alleged cartel-like structure within the industry, asserting, “The challenges I see in the music industry, I think people see this modern industry as a cartel kind of thing. That is, if you don’t belong to a confraternity or group, you cannot scale through to the next level.”

The singer shared personal experiences, recounting a trip to Ghana sponsored by a politician, which presented an opportunity for a record deal.

However, he revealed that the deal came with restrictive clauses that would compromise his authenticity.

Benue Boy’s reluctance to compromise his principles highlights the ethical dilemmas artists may face when navigating the complex landscape of the music business.

Detailing an instance where he rejected a tempting deal in Ghana, Benue Boy disclosed, “Somebody offered me a deal of $29,000 in Ghana, but I rejected it because it was gonna sink my life.”

His decision underscored the high stakes involved in the industry, where financial offers may come with compromises that could potentially impact an artist’s life and career negatively.

Expressing concern for the younger generation of artists, Benue Boy voiced his belief that a cartel is exerting control over the music industry, hindering the progress of emerging talents.

His assertion sparks a larger conversation about the influence of external forces on artistic expression and the potential consequences of succumbing to industry pressures.

As the conversation around the alleged cartel-like control unfolds, Benue Boy’s revelations serve as a call to action for a more transparent and equitable music industry.

The challenges he highlights bring to the forefront the need for a supportive environment that nurtures artistic authenticity and allows artists to thrive without compromising their values.

In navigating the intricate web of the music business, Benue Boy’s insights shed light on the complex choices artists face and the systemic challenges that may hinder their growth.

The path forward may require a collective effort to address the issues plaguing the industry, ensuring that it remains a space conducive to artistic expression, innovation, and the genuine advancement of talent.
