Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), has once again secured a coveted position on Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women list.
The 20th annual ranking, released on Tuesday, positions the Nigerian economist at the impressive 87th spot, reaffirming her standing as a powerful force on the international stage.
Forbes’ meticulous ranking, which considers factors such as money, media presence, impact, and spheres of influence, underscores the comprehensive criteria used to assess the power and influence of women globally.
In the latest release, Okonjo-Iweala is accompanied by other distinguished women, including South African businesswoman Mpumi Madisa, Tanzanian President Samia Hassan making her debut at the 93rd position, and Nigerian media mogul Mo Abudu securing the 98th spot.
The recognition marks Okonjo-Iweala’s seventh inclusion in the prestigious list, a remarkable journey that began in 2011.
Expressing her gratitude and humility regarding the acknowledgment, she took to her official handle, stating, “Feel truly honoured to be named one more time as one of the Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women in the World. This will be the 7th time, starting in 2011.”
Acknowledging the collective efforts of women making a difference globally, Okonjo-Iweala extended her congratulations to all women on the list and commended those tirelessly working to change the world, even if not formally recognized.
In a special mention, she celebrated her younger sister, Mo Abudu, emphasizing the significance of having two Nigerian women on this prestigious list.
As the seventh Director-General of the WTO, Okonjo-Iweala’s position is not only historic but also symbolic, as she broke gender and continental barriers to become the first woman and the first African to hold this esteemed position.
Assuming office on March 1, 2021, her term will extend until August 31, 2025, reflecting a tenure dedicated to steering global trade with a commitment to inclusivity and progress.
The recurrent inclusion of Okonjo-Iweala in Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women’s list underscores the enduring impact of her leadership, not only within the realm of global trade but also in the broader context of women breaking barriers and reshaping the narrative of power and influence.
As the international community continues to grapple with complex challenges, Okonjo-Iweala’s presence on this prestigious list serves as an inspiring beacon, demonstrating the transformative power of leadership, resilience, and a commitment to effect positive change on a global scale.
