38 Graduates Attain First-Class Honors at Wesley Varsity’s Convocation

The Vice-Chancellor of Wesley University, situated in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Professor Sunday Samuel Obeka, announced that 38 students achieved first-class honors during the institution’s 11th and 12th convocation ceremonies.

Professor Obeka shared this accomplishment during the 18th convocation ceremony, where degrees were conferred, and prizes were presented in Ondo.

In his convocation speech, he highlighted that a total of 348 graduates emerged from the institution, with 159 students securing second-class upper division honors.

The Vice-Chancellor underscored the Methodist Church’s historical commitment to using Western education as a tool for spreading Christianity.

He acknowledged the church’s contributions, including the establishment of primary schools, secondary schools, and Teacher Training Colleges.

During the convocation lecture titled “Early Church Fathers as a Panacea for Sustainable Development in Nigeria,” Dr. John Ujo David, a respected educationist and Registrar of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University in Makurdi, expressed concern about the commercialization of education in Nigeria.

Dr. David decried the current state of the education sector, emphasizing the gradual erosion of education’s value due to the alleged commercialization, stating, “Gradually and steadily, the erstwhile sound missionary schools are giving way to commercialized and unaffordable schools or miracle centers.”

He strongly criticized the high tuition fees in many faith-based tertiary institutions across the country.
