As Nigerians grapple with the harsh realities of economic hardship, the federal government remains resolute in its stance against food importation, asserting that domestic resources are fully capable of meeting the nation’s nutritional needs.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, reiterated this position following a high-level meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu in collaboration with state governors.
Addressing the press after the pivotal gathering, Idris underscored the government’s proactive measures to alleviate food scarcity by cracking down on food hoarders.
Collaborative efforts between security agencies and state governments have been mobilized to apprehend perpetrators and ensure the equitable distribution of food commodities at fair prices across the nation.
“The governors and Mr. President have collectively mandated security agencies to collaborate with state authorities to swiftly address this issue,” declared the Minister.
“Additionally, it has been decided that, in the best interest of our nation, food importation will be halted at this juncture.”
Emphasizing Nigeria’s inherent potential to achieve food self-sufficiency and even emerge as a net exporter, Idris dismissed notions of long-term dependency on imported food items.
He portrayed the current challenges as transient hurdles that the nation is poised to overcome expeditiously.
“Nigeria possesses the agricultural prowess to not only feed its populace but also contribute significantly to global food supply chains,” asserted Idris.
“What we are encountering presently is a passing storm, soon to be weathered with our robust interventions in the agricultural sector.”
The minister highlighted President Tinubu’s proactive declaration of a state of emergency on agriculture months ago, underscoring the concerted efforts of both federal and state governments in bolstering crop production and livestock management.
These strategic investments, Idris affirmed, are poised to yield tangible results in ensuring long-term food security and economic resilience.
As the nation navigates through the current hardships, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to prioritizing the welfare of its citizens.
The resolute stance against food importation signifies a collective determination to harness Nigeria’s agricultural potential, ushering in a future marked by prosperity and self-sufficiency.
Through concerted efforts and unwavering resolve, the nation stands poised to emerge stronger from the shadows of adversity, reaffirming its status as the breadbasket of the African continent.
